Wellington

For those outside of Australasia, Wellington is the capital of New Zealand.

(I should add here that New Zealand is a country completely separate from Australia: here's a map - NZ is the country with the light green circle around it) To give you an idea of distance, it takes about 12 hours to fly from Auckland - near the top of NZ, to LA.

This is me talking to my cat after a fantastic night at On-U-Sound ... yes, a glorious Wellington sunrise over Oriental Parade.

Wellington is a great city; it's harbour is quite stunning and it's really well designed for people like me (who hate waiting in traffic or walking miles to get anywhere!). The population is around 350 000 ... and there's lots to do.

Wellington has loads of live theatre and music, and there always seems to be a film festival/comedy festival/arts festival on.

There are lots of groovy restaurants and bars, and a few good late nite places. If you're new to town, email me and I'll send you my recommendations.

Here's the view from my bedroom window ...

Current haunts:

Studio9: Edward Street. Mmm - a little "commercial" I guess, but if there's a good DJ it's going to be a wicked night, guaranteed. Lovely staff and good vibes.

Q-bar on Courtenay Place; stylee but kitsch - leopard print lined walls and retro lamps with cheesy Lynch-like prints and some fine cocktail action.

If you're a lounge head who likes to eat, make sure you go to the Matterhorn on Cuba Street - excellent musak, superb food and lovely staff.

Valve on Vivian Street (formerly "Hole in the Wall") used to be a strip club in a former incarnation. Now it's a boy racer fantasy bar, complete with racing stripes on the tables. In addition to hearing lots of live music on probably the best sound system in town, you can also catch DJ's and theme nights.

Catch the funky Deville Brothers at Bar Bodega (Willis Street) whenever possible!

If you're into the dance scene never ever miss a Discotek function. Those boys know a funky house DJ or two when they see one and it's worth parting with the moolah to get fit shakin' yo' butt to the fine toons.
